The Tour: “Earth-Friendly Gardens of Falmouth”
The 2009 tour will feature ten beautiful and edible earth-friendly gardens chosen to demonstrate that edible gardens can also be beautiful; to showcase more sustainable gardening practices; and to feature several alternative residential energy systems with artists and craftspeople in each garden. The tour is self-paced, and gardens may be visited in no particular order at any time between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm.
The gardens feature:
- Native American culture, a large pond, and raised vegetable beds
- Over 300 kinds of rhododendron
- A view of Dam Pond at the end of Wild Harbor River
- Another view of Dam Pond
- Japanese plants, aquaculture, vegetables, and lots more ogranic delights
- A secret organic garden on Coonamesset Pond
- A Thai garden with vegetables, fruit trees, and koi pond
- A community garden that helps feed Falmouth Service Center clients
- A hillside site that accommodates birds and other animals
- A series of gardens created by a Master Gardener
The mid-summer date will find herbs and vegetables, daylilies (which are also edible), hydrangeas, and other summer flowers at their peak. Each of the sites chosen for the tour will feature ecologically sustainable gardening and landscaping practices in keeping with growing concerns about the environment. Many will include ideas for growing vegetables and other edibles along with flowers and ornamental plants.
The Workshop: “Living Lightly on Cape Cod”
Learn in more depth about integrated design and best practices for greater sustainability and self reliance in food, energy and water at a workshop conducted by Hilde Maingay and Earle Barnhart in their gardens at Alchemy Farm in Hatchville. The workshop will be offered by Hilde Maingay and Earle Barnhart at Alchemy Farm Cohousing from 9:00 am to 10:30 am.
The tickets
Tickets for the tour cost $20. They include garden descriptions, locations and directions for a self-paced tour.
