The Fifth Annual Rachel Carson Harvest Dinner, sponsored by the Social Action/Welcoming Congregation Committee, took place on Saturday evening, October 13, at the Fellowship meetinghouse. Proceeds benefited food pantries in Falmouth, Bourne, and Sandwich.
The event started in 2003 as a local observance of World Food Day and remembrance of environmentalist Rachel Carson, who is important to our congregation for several reasons. She was a religious naturalist who studied at Woods Hole. She became involved with the large All Souls congregation of Unitarian Universalists in Washington, DC, at the end of her life. And, of course, she was one of the first American women to have a career in the sciences..
Sunflower Awards were presented to some of the individuals who have inspired and nourished communities in Upper Cape Cod in recent months. The menu included ham and beans and fixings, hearty vegetarian dishes, and desert -- all homemade. Entertainment was provided by he Falmouth Fiddlers – a group of musicians from Cape Cod who play lively fiddle tunes and other acoustic music..
