Religious Education Curriculum
FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH 2011-2012
Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth’s Religious Education Program. The children and youth of this church are valued. We try to weave them into the fabric of the congregation here at UUFF in many ways.
Sunday school begins at 9:30, the same time as our worship service. On the first Sunday of every month, our children start their Sunday morning in the sanctuary for worship with the entire congregation. After a story is shared, children go to their classrooms. The last Sunday of every month is Children’s chapel. Children gather together in the chapel room of the east wing for their own worship time including an age appropriate sermon and other related rituals and celebrations. Children are asked to bring an “offering” to chapel, consisting of a donation for the local food pantries.
The theme for the 2011-2012 Sunday School year is World Religions.
Programs Offered
Nursery
Childcare with an experienced childcare provider is available during the Sunday service for babies and toddlers.
Preschool
“We Are Many, We Are One”, a yearlong curriculum, offers the children the grounding of a religious community and tradition, along with the freedom to discover and express own their uniqueness.
Grades K-2
A combination of two curricula will be taught. “Picture Book World Religions” introduces world religions through the use of beautiful picture books in a gentle respectful way. “Stories About God” provides the opportunity for children to have a variety of experiences with God and encourages them to express their own thoughts and feelings about God as well as the understanding the God has many forms and many names.
Grades 3-6
“Holidays and Holy Days” uses celebrations from the world’s religious traditions, including Unitarian Universalism, to teach lessons about diversity and similarity, accepting other faiths, finding meaning in rituals and traditions, and just having fun celebrating with special foods, activities and stories that are part of every holiday and holy day.
Grades 7 - 9
“Our Neighboring Faiths” introduces youth to the faith traditions and practices of other religious groups in their community. This wonderful program offers the participants the chance to visit houses of worship and meeting spaces, and to increase their understanding and appreciation of religious diversity.
Grades 10-12
Students of this age are invited to participate in our Coming of Age program. This yearlong program provides youths the opportunity to explore their own spiritual beliefs and practices. The year culminates with the writing of a personal credo statement and a Coming of Age worship service with the larger congregation.
Youth Group
UUFF has a thriving youth group for grades 7 and up. They meet every Sunday evening usually at 5:00. The youth develop their own curriculum according to the needs and interest of the group, with the facilitation of three youth advisors.
